Researchers Egypt’s oldest winter-solstice-oriented tomb

In this way, the tomb perfectly recorded the entire solar cycle, connected with the concept of rebirth. While the winter solstice marked the beginning of the victory of sunlight over darkness, the summer solstice coincided with the beginning of the annual flooding of the Nile, so both occasions had significant symbolism similar to the resurrection of the deceased governor.

Perfection in orientation

In this article, recently published in Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry, researchers who, to achieve perfection in orientation, the Egyptian architect limited himself to using a two-elbow pole approximately one meter long, a square and tunics, with which he managed to perfectly calculate the orientation of the funeral chapel and the location of the statue of the governor.

In addition, they say that the Egyptian architect not only achieved the best orientation, but also designed its volume with wonderful precision, as we decided in a previous article published by UJA in 2020, which revealed that the volume of the tomb was much better calculated to avoid coinciding with a past tomb.

The tomb of this governor, listed as No. 33, and in all likelihood built by Governor Heqaib-ankh, was excavated by the UJA between 2008 and 2018. Since then it has been studied architecturally by other specialists, including the Professor of Architecture. at the UMA Lola Joyanes, who has held this position since 2015, exercising her own line of studies since 2019.

The paintings that this UMA researcher has made in the necropolis touch everything related to architecture and landscape, specifically through drawing and photogrammetry.

Specific to reproduce the position of the sun

The Andalusian scientists reached these conclusions thanks to the identity of the era of structure of the tomb, which allowed them to use a fast software (Dialux Evo) that reproduces the position of the sun with respect to the horizon in antiquity.
