Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was diagnosed with coronavirus on Sunday and canceled his planned trips while he recovers.

Kishida developed a fever and cough on Saturday night and tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, Japanese media reported. The prime minister’s office was not immediately available for comment.

The 65-year-old prime minister was on summer vacation last week and was due to return to work on Monday. It is not known where or how he became infected.

Kishida will not go as a user to an African progress convention later this month in Tunisia, but will participate online, and has postponed his own for the Middle East, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Cases of coronavirus infections have recently increased in Japan, with most people, including Kishida, having been vaccinated. Other world leaders, including U. S. President Joe Biden, have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and have recovered.
