The Pittsburgh Pirates’ most sensible prospect, Oneil Cruz, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a car accident that killed three other people in the Dominican Republic on Monday.
Dominican prosecutors, according to an ESPN report, allege that Cruz was under the influence of alcohol when the car he was driving crashed into a motorcycle in Peravia province. Cruz, 21, faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
Previous reports Tuesday said the accident killed the other 3 people, a 23-year-old, a 20-year-old and a 19-year-old who were on a motorcycle and happened after curfew in the country.
In a statement Tuesday through the Pirates to The Athletic, the team declared the turn of destination and said Cruz was cooperating with the authorities.
“The Pirates are aware of the tragic turn of fate in the Dominican Republic involving Oneil Cruz. We’ve been in touch with Oneil and he’s cooperating fully with local authorities. We will provide an update as more data is available. “
Cruz, a 6-foot 7-inch shortscrewer, is the third prospect in the Pittsburgh formula according to MLB Pipeline. A hearing on the case is scheduled for Wednesday.
