From Af-Pak to Asia

As U. S. and coalition forces prepare to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, the new report urges Washington to consider Pakistan not only, if not primarily, in the context of U. S. -Afghanistan policy, but rather to reorient relations towards Asia. “Asia that does not take into account Pakistan’s role is incomplete, and a US strategy for Pakistan that focuses its role primarily in the context of Afghanistan is shortsighted,” wrote report author Daniel S. Markey, senior researcher at the CFR for India, Pakistan and South Asia.

The report, Reorienting U. S. Strategy in Pakistan: From Af-Pak to Asia, outlines a two-pronged strategy for long-term U. S. policy toward Pakistan: protecting against security threats and supporting Pakistan’s economic expansion and normalized relations with its neighbors. Markey recommends in the United States:
