Sky News presenter Sharri Markson said Cricket South Africa’s decision to sack Jewish player David Teeger as under-19 captain was to “punish” him rather than protect him.
Teeger had dedicated his Rising Star Award at a Jewish achiever ceremony to a South African family whose son was missing in Israel, sparking outrage and controversy.
“An investigation was conducted to determine if he had damaged any code, and court cases were filed in which his comments were deemed provocative because Palestinians were being killed by the Israeli army,” Markson said.
“Teeger defended himself by announcing his private opinion that Israel had not committed genocide, war crimes, or crimes against humanity. He cleared himself of all charges and it seemed that the matter was over. »
On Friday, South Africa stripped him of his job as cricket captain, saying it protected him and was only concerned about his protection ahead of protests at tournament venues.
“They’re not protective Teegers, they’re punishing him because he’s Jewish, because he supports a Jewish homeland; that’s obviously devout discrimination,” Markson said.
