R. I. COVID-19 cases surpassed 1,546 last week, with five new deaths

PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island’s confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 1546 from Oct. 9-15, with five new deaths, the Rhode Island Department of Health announced Thursday.

The branch has moved from reporting COVID-19 statistics days a week to a weekly report. The figures are now reported from Sunday to Saturday last week.

New hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients totaled 131 last week, to 139 reported the week of Oct. 2-8. Of the other 118 people hospitalized Oct. 15, six were in intensive care and fewer than five were ventilated.

There were 146 new cases matching another 100,000 people reported in Rhode Island from Oct. 9-15.

By comparison, 1,956 new cases were reported from 9 to 15 October 2021. The transmission rate on 15 October 2021 was 174 cases corresponding to 100,000 people.

There were another 909,881 people fully vaccinated, or about 86 percent of Rhode Islanders.

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in the overall state 430,636, representing increases and revisions to data from previous days. Of that number of reported cases, 409,833 are Rhode Island residents.

Deaths from the virus in Rhode Island overall 3,686.

15,225 tests were processed Oct. 9-15, with 8. 4 million tests administered in Rhode Island since the pandemic began.
