World Cup host Qatar is investigating the death of an overseas Filipino worker, an official said Thursday, after learning he died at an educational base during the ongoing soccer tournament.
Athletic said the man fell off a ramp while repairing lamps at a complex used as an educational base for Saudi Arabia’s national soccer team.
“The incident is being investigated by Qatari authorities,” a Qatari official said on condition of anonymity.
Manila’s Foreign Ministry told AFP on Thursday that the guy died “while running in a hotel in the city of Mesaieed,” south of Doha.
The diplomats “are working with the judicial government to download further details,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that it would facilitate “the fastest repatriation” of his body.
World soccer’s governing body, FIFA, said it was “deeply saddened by this tragedy. “
“As soon as FIFA reported the accident, we contacted the local government to request additional details,” he said in a statement.
The deceased guy, a contractor, is also “not within the purview” of the committee, he said in a statement.
Migrants make up more than 2. 5 million of Qatar’s 2. 9 million people, and career situations have been heavily criticized, especially in the run-up to the World Cup.
Last month, Qatar’s government said 414 migrant workers died from injuries in the country between 2014 and 2020.
Under pressure from foreign industry unions, Qatar has undertaken labour reforms that have been well received. These include the introduction of a minimum wage of 1,000 riyals ($260) and the restriction of hours when staff can faint in excessive heat.
The World Cup began on November 20 and ends on December 18.
