Punjab police warn of fake messages in COVID-19 using borrowed data: report

Punjab police warned of a phishing attack sending fake messages that secure Rs 2,000 as government COVID-19 aid packages to others to borrow their data.

The warning issued through the Digital Investigation Analysis and Training Center of the Punjab Police Cybercrime Unit.

Fraudulent messages containing a UNIVERSAL resource locator (URL) are transmitted via instant messaging, such as SMS and WhatsApp.

Cybercriminals ask users to click on the link to get cash from their bank accounts and, in turn, their data, an official spokesman said.

“These types of phishing attacks can allow cybercriminals to take over your device by recording keystrokes, or access your own money-related knowledge and information, which can lead to emptying your bank account,” the official said.

According to the spokesman, the message reads: “Despite everything, the government approved and began to provide a loose aid budget of 2,000 rupees to each citizen. Below you will find how to claim and get your credits right away as I just did https: // covid19 -relieffund.com/. You can only claim and receive credits once and it’s also limited, so get your now right away.”

Once you click on the link, you open a page with a congratulatory message that says: “Get 7,000 rupees to immediately lose from your bank account. Respond to the survey to gain advantages from loose lock help funds.”

Police suggested other people remain incredibly cautious and forget about suspicious URL links on social media platforms.

“If you find such a message, through a social media platform, do not pass it on to others and delete it immediately. Clicking on those links presents the main dangers because it possibly is malware that can also redirect you to other fraudulent sites, which can lead to a monetary loss for the user,” the spokesman said.
