PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) — Pueblo’s only COVID-19 test is about to close after more than two years of operation.
The county said the closure was due to a lack of call and funding, adding that the site was a valuable resource for Southern Colorado, but that other people were no longer like they used to.
COVID-19 cases across the state have remained strong over the past two months. Lately we are sitting on an average of 11 cases compared to another 100,000 people. While this doesn’t come with at-home testing where other people don’t disclose their status, we’re still nowhere near the previous omicron peak in 2022.
According to the Colorado Department of Health, statewide testing sites now serve only 6% of what they are capable of.
“We’re going to move to a more general communicable disease model,” said Alicia Solise of the Pueblo Health Department.
The state of Colorado said its action plan is now being adapted to an “endemic” type of reaction and adjustments are being made, such as the state’s final COVID-19 vaccine hotline. The Health Ministry said the average call gained 2% of the number of calls won in the first six weeks of the hotline’s existence, and 5 to 10% of the weekly call volume they saw in the fall and winter of 2021.
State and county public fitness departments say they are transitioning to a more endemic response, are still tracking COVID-19 and will respond as needed.
