Protesters set fire to government construction in southern Iraq

BAGHDAD

Protesters set fire to a government building in Iraq’s Dhi Qar governorate on Monday, according to security sources.

A group of masked men took to the streets of central Nasiriyah to protest, the resources said.

Protesters then set fire to the governor’s home with Molotov cocktails, they added.

A curfew declared in the city after this incident.

Nasiriyah, 350 kilometers (217 miles) south of the capital, Baghdad, is mired in poverty and plagued by poor infrastructure and unemployment, especially among young people.

It is the main bastion of the anti-corruption protest movement.

In 2019, mass anti-government protests erupted that lasted months and then-Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi resigned.

On 10 October 2021, early parliamentary elections were held, in which supporters of prominent Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr emerged as transparent winners with 73 seats in parliament.
