Project Cargo Conference Covers Key Topics in Singapore

The first Project Cargo convention took place last week, on November 3rd, at the Transport Logistic Southeast Asia trade show.

The morning’s consultation began with a panel chaired by David Kershaw, editor-in-chief of HLPFI, who tested the effect of China Plus One’s procurement methods on the project logistics industry. Panelists included Liew Teck Liong, CFO of AAL Shipping; Michael Mulvenna, Vice President, Industrial Projects, DHL, Asia Pacific; Sumeet Ghildiyal, Director of Project Logistics, Singapore & India at Geodis; and Torbjörn Larisch, CEO of the FLS Group.

There was broad consensus among our panelists that a greater degree of China plus one sourcing methods is being seen in the heavy industry sector, with India being a specific beneficiary. North Asia and China will remain a key market, but the resilience of the supply chain is being questioned. taken into account through the manufacturers: the replacement will be a super marathon, not a sprint.

The scale of the replacement will also affect some of the APAC region’s allocation hotspots, which were also discussed extensively, with an investigation of power in all its forms, during the morning’s second panel. Edgare Kerkwijk (Member of the Board of Directors of the Asia Wind Energy Association), Felix Schoeller (Director of AAL Shipping), Florian Pinz (Managing Director of Singapore and Malaysia of Blue Water Shipping) and Frédéric Pagniez (Managing Director of Dextra Industry) participated in this consultation

In the afternoon, a panel discussion between Susana Germino (Managing Director of Sustainability and Decarbonization at Swire Shipping), SK Lim (Managing Director Pacific at G2 Ocean) and Lars Vetterlein (Regional Head of APAC Maritime Charter at DHL Industrial Projects) addressed some of the demanding situations faced by multipurpose and heavy-duty vessel operators in the region. Margins are narrower than they were 12 months ago, but ships are still busy; Caution and calm are warranted when considering the benefits of EU ETS surcharges and the potential fuels of the future.

Other source chain hazards faced by assigned logisticians were discussed during our final panel with Ashleigh Schwarz, Director of Trans Global Projects in Australia, and Mike Schoofs, Global Head of Renewable Energy and Energy Logistics at Kuehne Nagel. They discussed the importance of exporters remaining vigilant to Australia’s biosecurity measures to prevent a recurrence of port disruptions; raising the profile and advocating for the industry to attract and retain talent; and the role of increased digitalization in meeting the most sensitive environmental and compliance requirements.

HLPFI would like to thank everyone who attended the convention that day, as well as our speakers and sponsors, including AAL Shipping, Blue Water Shipping, DHL Industrial Projects, Fracht Group, and Kuehne Nagel. More main points about each query will be published in the January/February 2024 issue of the HLPFI journal.
