This has come a week since British holidaymakers once again gave Portugal the green touch.
The corporate PC agency, which publishes daily infection figures, classifies Portugal as an “orange” nation, meaning it is reaching the quarantine threshold with 19.4 infections, matching another 100,000 people over a seven-day period.
The British government places countries with 20 instances per 100,000 on its quarantine list.
Paul Charles of the PC Agency said the existing infection rate means the country could be removed from the government room in the coming days.
Charles told the Daily Mail: “We’ll have to see a miraculous drop in the number of cases until Thursday to be added to the government’s intermittent quarantine list when temporarily diverted to the red zone.”
He added that Portugal is “a victim of its own good luck by temporarily attracting so many tourists.”
The news is a crisis for the estimated 75,000 Britons who are either in the country or expected to arrive soon.
The Skyscanner online page reported a 2000% increase in bookings when Portugal joined the UK lounge on 22 August.
If removed from the room again, the British will have to isolate themselves for two weeks upon their return to the UK and may have difficulty obtaining insurance.
People threaten 1000 euros and a record number of criminals if they break quarantine rules when they return.
This comes after Switzerland, Jamaica and the Czech Republic were added to the ban last week.
A total of 17 countries that were once considered “safe” were added to the last month.
The Association of British Travel Agents has criticized the government’s stop-and-start measures.
One spokesman said: “As long as quarantine maintains the government’s main containment strategy opposed to Covid-19, the industry will continue to suffer.
“Given the rapidly converting infection rates in other regions, it is imperative that the government act as temporarily as it can imagine to assess the threat on a regionalized basis and not across the country.”
