Pope Francis met Friday with Muslim leaders in the Gulf kingdom of Bahrain with the message that Catholics and Muslims are called to paint to announce world peace.
Speaking at the Grand Mosque on the grounds of Bahrain’s Sakhir Palace on Nov. 4, the pope told the Council of Muslim Elders that he sought to “travel in tune with the spirit of Francis of Assisi. “
“God is the one of peace. May he allow us to be ‘channels of his peace’ everywhere,” Pope Francis said.
The Pope added: “The God of peace never provokes war, never incites hatred, never supports violence. We, who in it, are called to announce peace with peace teams, such as encounter, patient negotiation and dialogue, which is the oxygen of non-violent coexistence.
The Muslim Council of Elders is a foreign organization founded in the UAE in 2014 to work in combicountry to promote peace, principles of tolerance, address sources of conflict within Muslim communities and “bring the Islamic country to combicountry,” according to its website.
The board members come with Nigerian Sheikh Ibrahim Ibn Saleh al-Hussaini; Jordanian Prince Ghazi bin Mohammed bin Talal; Grand Mufti of Azerbaijan Sheikh Allahshükür Hummat Pashazade; and Abdullah bin Bayyah, an influential Islamic scholar who teaches in Saudi Arabia.
Pope Francis told the council: “We, who descend from Abraham, the father of peoples in faith, cannot fear only those who are ‘ours,’ but, as we become more and more united, we will have to speak to the whole of humanity, to all who live on this earth.
Before the assembly at the mosque, Pope Francis held personal talks with Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, a Sunni cleric and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in Cairo.
Pope Francis and al-Tayeb jointly signed a document on human fraternity in Abu Dhabi in 2019, the pope’s first vacation in the Arabian Peninsula. The two have met several times since, adding Pope Francis’ final vacation in Kazakhstan.
During the meeting, Pope Francis presented the Grand Imam with a sculpture of an olive tree, signifying peace. He praised al-Tayeb for his “bravery” in speaking about the discussion among Muslims at the interfaith summit in Bahrain.
Both Al-Tayeb and Francis appealed for peace in Ukraine in their Friday morning speeches at the Bahrain convention on the East-West discussion in the presence of other leaders, adding to Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople.
Pope Francis made a “sincere call for an end to the war in Ukraine and the beginning of serious negotiations for peace. “The pope called on “wonderful religions” to be “a religion of peace for our world. “
Al-Tayeb said in his prepared remarks: “I also call for an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war to save the lives of other innocent people who have no role in this violent tragedy. I ask that the banner of peace be raised, not victory. “, and for us to discuss and negotiate.
Pope Francis will visit Bahrain, a Muslim island country east of Saudi Arabia in the Persian Gulf, from November 3-6. The Pope invited Bahrain through King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
While Shia Muslims make up the majority of the population, Bahrain’s royal circle of relatives belongs to the Sunni branch of Islam, leading to widespread sectarian tensions in the country. Human rights teams have also accused the government of committing abuses against the Shia majority and migrant workers, and of unjust imprisonment.
Pope Francis made history as the first pope to stop in the Kingdom of Bahrain when his flight landed at Sakhir Air Base in the city of Awali. Francis was also the first pope to stop in other Muslim-majority countries, adding the United Arab Emirates in 2019 and Iraq in 2021.
During the Pope’s trip to the Arabian Peninsula, he spoke about the importance of freedom for devotees and the role of women in public life.
The Pontiff traveled as a “sower of peace” from November 3 to 6.
“God never leaves you alone,” the Holy Father confided to the teenagers, explaining how “prayer opens the heart. “
About 2,900 of the participants registered for the stadium’s Mass with Pope Francis arrived from neighboring Saudi Arabia.
The Holy Father made the comments as he reflected on Pentecost at an ecumenical assembly and prayer for peace at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia.
