On Saturday, 10 others were arrested when ultra-Orthodox protesters clashed with police. Hundreds of protesters blocked the intersection of Yirmiyahu and Shamgar streets and threw stones, eggs and other items at police officers responding to the situation, Israeli police said in a statement. Some of the protesters demolished the police barricades that had settled in the locks, according to the communiqué.
On Sunday, at least two other people were arrested, when a lot of ultra-Orthodox Jews set fire to the trash and cut fences to protest the closures.
Also on Monday, ultra-Orthodox lawmakers asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to paint to finish what they called the skewed and selective application of public aptitude that unfairly attacks their communities.
MPs from the ultra-Orthodox Shas parties and Unified Torah Judaism (UYD) met with Netanyahu along with Health Minister Yuli Edelstein and Public Security Minister Amir Ohana after days of court cases and threats from some lawmakers to simply block the coalition.
At the height of the first wave, the cities of Beit Shemesh, Elad and Modiin Illit each had more active instances than Tel Aviv, the second largest population center in the country. In April, the ultra-Orthodox ordered the closure of the town of Bnei Brak, as did several predominantly Jasidic neighborhoods of Beit Shemesh.
In a statement issued Monday, the Prime Minister’s Office said that before the long-term closures, consultations would be held with representatives of the ultra-Orthodox network and, if possible, command centres would be opened in the affected communities.
