At least 18 other people were killed in a police raid on organized gangs in Brazil’s second-largest city, Rio de Janeiro, local media reported Thursday.
Among those killed in the large operation through 400 officials in the Complexo do Alemao community were 16 gang members, an army policeman and a civilian, the Globo newspaper said, citing a press conference held by police.
The goal of the operation was to detain gang members involved in robberies, but police said their officials had been “violently attacked. “
The outlet, however, said a local human rights commission and a legal settlement had claimed the death toll could be higher.
