SINGAPORE: Large mirrors have been placed in about 222 blocks of the Singapore Housing Board to combat cycling-related crimes.
Following an initiative designed last year, Singapore police installed mirrors mainly in bicycle parking spaces and spaces, a police spokesman said Wednesday (September 9) in response to questions from the ANC.
“These places are decided at critical points where motorcycle theft occurs,” the spokesman said.
“The installation of acrylic mirrors has proven effective in deterring bicycle theft. “
Police said in their report that non-public bicycles and mobility devices are “common targets” of thieves and, in 2014, described bike theft as one of the “major criminal concerns” of recent years.
According to crime statistics, the number of bike thefts fell from 905 cases in 2017 to 522 cases in 2018, 42%.
In a news story posted on their website, police told the public to leave motorcycles at home when they are not in use, or to attach them to permanent structures with smart quality locks when parked in public.
Parking spaces have superior human traffic, preferably with CCTV cameras, they said, while the detachable parts of the motorcycle must be closed or secured.
“Make permanent identity marks, such as engravings on your bike frame,” the police added.
Police spokesman said Wednesday that mirrors act as “open surveillance. “
“They are strategically installed to increase the likelihood of crime solvency by optimizing coverage,” the spokesman added.
