BRUSSELS, Aug 11 (Reuters) – Poland will only get cash from the European Union’s recovery fund after it has reached the milestones and targets the Polish government jointly agreed with the EU after several months of negotiations, the European Commission said on Thursday.
Poland is eligible for €24 billion in grants and €11. 5 billion in very reasonable loans to rebuild its greener and more digitized economy after the COVID-19 pandemic.
But the money is frozen because Poland’s ruling Eurosceptic PiS party does not want to undo changes in the judiciary over the past seven years, although it is one of the terms jointly agreed with the Commission.
PiS leaders vowed this week that they would make no concessions and threatened to make it harder for the EU to make a resolution unless Poland can access EU funds.
“The Commission and Poland have been discussing this plan for months, down to the smallest detail, it has been signed in parts, so there is no room for misunderstandings,” a Commission spokeswoman told a normal news conference.
“It is transparent that the agreed milestones and objectives will have to be achieved,” he said. (Reporting via Jan Strupczewski)
