The Polish government is investigating a leak in a pipeline carrying crude from Russia to Germany, as Europe worries that disruptions in its electrical infrastructure will affect materials and further increase costs.
Operator PERN halted flows in one of the northern sections of Druzhba after detecting a leak on Tuesday.
“At this time, the causes of the event are unknown: the broken cable was immediately disabled,” he said in a statement.
The Druzhba pipeline is divided into two sections, and the northern canal supplies oil to Germany and Poland. It has pumped about 490,000 barrels per day to the two countries in months, according to Reuters.
Russia has militarized its energy exports in retaliation for Western sanctions imposed after Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine.
It cut capacity on primary pipelines to Europe, Nord Stream added, and subsidized the OPEC cartel’s refusal to increase oil production while the United States pushed the bloc to increase production.
Falling source of Russia’s oil may push costs up to $150 a barrel, JPMorgan analysts warned last month.
Europe has expressed fears that materials will fall further if Russia sabotages its electrical infrastructure after leaks were detected in Nord Stream’s pipelines.
The German government accused Russia of sabotaging the pipeline formula after Denmark and Sweden discovered that damage had been caused with tons of TNT.
Poland’s most sensible energy official, Mateusz Berger, told Reuters that initial tests indicated Druzhba had suffered “accidental damage” but that investors would likely still be worried about Europe’s energy supply.
Brent crude jumped 1. 2% to $94. 96 after the leak announced on Wednesday, while WTI crude rose 1. 4% to $89. 77. Both benchmarks traded at roughly the same point at the last revision.
