WARSAW (Reuters) – Poland may have to build a fence on its border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, a senior Polish official said on Tuesday, as Warsaw suspects Russia plans to cross African and Asian migrants next week.

Poland accuses Russia and its Belarusian best friend of migrants as part of a “hybrid war” crusade to destabilize Europe. While tensions are high due to the war in Ukraine, Poland fears a repeat of the 2021 crisis when thousands of African and Middle Eastern migrants tried to cross the Belarusian border.

At the time, Minsk denied creating the scenario by airlifting other people seeking to enter the European Union, and blamed Warsaw and Brussels for a humanitarian crisis that resulted in the deaths of several migrants in the woods along the border.

Krzysztof Sobolewski, secretary-general of the ruling Law and Justice party, told public broadcaster Polskie Radio 1 that Poland has plans to build a barrier on Russia’s Kaliningrad border, similar to the one it built on the border with Belarus.

“We will have to strengthen our forces on this segment of the border and also group together. . . to build border fortifications similar to those we have lately in the Polish-Belarusian segment,” he said.

Russian media reported that Kaliningrad had opened its skies to flights from the Middle East and Asia in a bid to attract more airlines and tourists.

Poland has built an upper metal barrier of 5. 5 meters (18 feet), equipped with motion detectors and cameras, which stretches about 187 km (116 miles) along the border with Belarus.

Poland had said in the past that the border guard had won an investment to build an “electronic barrier” of sensors and cameras at the Kaliningrad border.

On Tuesday, a spokesman for Polish border guards told state news agency PAP that it would be a company that would build the electronic barrier until the end of November and that the formula would be built in the first three quarters of next year or so. Two hundred kilometers of border.

Sobolewski told Reuters in a text message that possibly more migrants from Kaliningrad would cross into Poland “in the coming weeks. “

Since February 24, 7. 26 million Ukrainians have entered Poland, Polish border guards.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters at a briefing that Russia would interfere in any resolution on the barriers.

“History shows the stupidity of decisions to build walls every time, because over the years or decades, all walls fall,” he said.

Sobolewski also said there were symptoms of larger teams of migrants showing up at the border with Belarus.
