An 81-year-old Danish woman traveling from Africa to Canada was arrested at Warsaw airport on suspicion of illegal possession of heroin for more than $515,000, Polish officials said Friday.
Customs officials at Frederic Chopin Airport checked the woman’s luggage Sunday after distrusting her itinerary and uncomfortable behavior. Packages containing five kilograms (11 pounds) of heroin were found under a fake suitcase bottom.
The woman, who was travelling from Malawi and Kenya via Doha and Warsaw, denied wrongdoing and said members of the family circle had given her the suitcase with gifts for relatives in Canada, according to Aleksandra Skrzyniarz, a spokeswoman for the Warsaw prosecutor’s office.
She was detained for 3 months and prosecutors opened an investigation. Under Polish law, he faces up to 15 years in prison for illegal possession of narcotics.
