WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s defense minister said Wednesday he ordered the construction of a barrier along the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave.
The move comes amid suspicions that Russia is making plans to facilitate illegal border crossings by Asian and African migrants.
Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said the border will be secured so Poland feels secure. He said he had legal structure of a transient barrier along the 210-kilometer (130-mile) border. Work will begin on Wednesday.
Poland’s border with Belarus became the scene of a primary migration crisis last year, with large numbers of others crossing illegally. Poland erected a metal wall on the border with Belarus that ended in June.
Polish and other EU leaders have accused the government of Belarus, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, of orchestrating migration to create chaos and the department within the European Union.
