Plans for the new location of Montreal’s Holocaust Museum unveiled

Founded through survivors decades ago, Montreal’s Holocaust Museum is too large for its current location on Côte-Ste-Catherine Road and will move into a new home.

Lately, the museum’s design has 400 artifacts on display, but another 13,000 are in storage. The new one promises to be bigger and more high-tech.

“There’s clear glass on the floor, so when other people pass by, they can see through the garden,” said Eva Kuper, who is part of the variety jury for the museum’s new architectural design. “There is also a memorial wall that you can see from the street. “

Kuper is one of 9,000 Holocaust survivors who settled in Montreal.

Many settled along St-Laurent Boulevard, where the new museum will be built: 3535 St-Laurent, near Prince Arthur Street. Lately it is a car park.

Kuper says the new area will allow visitors to reflect on what they see. “Very after seeing something disturbing, which is very easy to do in a Holocaust museum, as you can imagine, there will be reflected image spaces, green areas and gardens. “

The new design will accommodate more visitors, Sarah Fogg, communications director at Montreal’s Holocaust Museum.

“To welcome so many other people and also offer them even more meaningful delights, they will be exhibitions, they will be study rooms and testimonial spaces. It will be an enhanced delight for visitors of all ages,” he said.

The $90 million prize is paid for with public funds and a $15 million donation from the Azrieli Foundation is added.

The existing location will remain open until the inauguration of the much larger site.

Construction begins next year with plans to open in 2025.
