Pilgrim’s Pride meat giant has undergone 170 Covid-19 tests at its Cornish bacon and ham processing plant.
A singles alert to the NHS Testing and Tracking Service’s Cornwall Council Public Health Team led to the discovery of the outbreak at the Redruth remedy plant, which has been tested on some 500 workers since mid-September.
Most staff tested positive for the virus and knew they were using Covid-19 and had no symptoms at the time of the results.
Pilgrim’s Pride, known as Tulip until last month, said the outbreak gave the impression of matching the increase in the prevalence of coronavirus in Cornwall.
“We have noticed many more cases of Covid-19 in Cornwall in the last 14 days than we have noticed at our company of 6,000 employees at thirteen sites in the UK since the beginning of this pandemic,” said a spokesman.
“We recognize our role and day-to-day work in our network and continue to comply with and exceed government rules as we have done since March. Our groups have worked very hard with local government and public aptitude to manage this complicated scenario and have behaved valiantly with professionalism and integrity as they continue to play their part in maintaining the UK food chain.
According to Rachel Wigglesworth, acting director of public health at the Cornwall Council, site workers study and “potentially have stopped a much wider spread in [the] community. “
It is intended that the tests in it are almost complete, with only a small amount of effects to be confirmed.
The news comes when positive cases of coronavirus at Bernard Matthews in Suffolk have increased from 18 to 36. So far, 123 workers have been evaluated in the Array.
However, production at the turkey processing plant would be affected.
Meanwhile, Scottish vegetable supplier Kettle Produce has been forced to close some of the production at one of its two processing and packaging sites in Fife following positive testing.
To date, 10 cases have been shown at Kettle’s Balmalcolm plant, which processes ready- and washed brassicas and salads; his dual in Freuchie would not be affected.
“We remain committed to proceeding to meet the needs of our customers,” said John McGregor, Kettle’s Director of Human Resources.
“We will continue to work hard with the applicable agencies and remain committed to the social estating protocols and measures that our corporation has implemented to protect our groups and their families. “
