Philippines strict review of Covid-19 vaccine

Philippine officials on Thursday trusted the public that any vaccine opposed to the new coronavirus would have to go through a strict regulatory review before being distributed to Filipinos.

Concerns about the protection of a new Russian vaccine opposed to the Covid-19 arose after Moscow announced it in a position to mass produce it in October and presented itself to the Philippines or joined local corporations to manufacture it in the country.

Eric Domingo, director of the Food and Drug Administration, said the Manila government would be “very cautious” in approving the vaccine, called Sputnik V.

“We want to make sure that before a vaccine is launched it is effective,” he said in a television interview.

Domingo said Filipino officials met with brands and scientists who developed Sputnik V to discuss Phase 3 clinical trials in the country.

“The Philippines is a smart clinical trial site because we know there is network transmission in many of our communities, so this area can,” he said.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said Manila and Moscow plan to conduct simultaneous phase 3 trials of the vaccine until October through March next year.

Russia will put all test prices, which would involve up to 3,000 volunteers, he added.

“We expect the Russian vaccine to be registered until April, which means that until May 1, 2021, our president will get the vaccines,” Roque said. “This is not a metaphorical statement. He’s in a position to go through it.”

The Ministry of Health reported another 4,002 coronavirus infections on Thursday, bringing the country’s national total to 147,526, the number of cases in Southeast Asia. The death toll also rose to 2,426 with 23 deaths most reported, he added.

Confidence in vaccines in the country was greatly affected in 2017 when a dengue vaccination programme was closed due to protection considerations similar to the Dengvaxia vaccine.

Critics have linked the vaccine to a lot of deaths of children who were vaccinated between April 2016 and December 2017. Since then, the Philippine Food and Drug Administration has revoked the registration of the vaccine.
