Philippines considers imaginable use of saliva-based COVID-19 test

MANILA, Philippines – Local experts are exploring the COVID-19 saliva control option in the Philippines after the U.S. reportedly legalized the use of the new cheap coronavirus control method.

‘Pinag-aaralan’ yan ng lab mavens panel natin. I think they gave us this matagal na data, siguro mga 3 weeks or a month ago,” Vergeire told reporters at an online press conference on Wednesday.

However, the fitness officer explained that saliva-based testing is an absolutely new approach to COVID-19 detection, but only one more approach to collecting samples.

“Itong saliva pinag-aralan as a pattern na pwede or as a specimen that we can use.Tinitignan ng ating lab panel kasi mas magiging madali kapag ka laway lang ang gagamitin,” Vergeire said.

“But maraming mga pinakita ang ating lab mavens panel na medyo more boring siya kasi minsan laway possibly went mga debris ng pagkain so marami tayong pinag-aaralan ukol diyan,” he added.

U.S. officials recently announced approval of the legal emergency use of saliva for COVID-19.

The new test, called SalivaDirect and developed through researchers from the Yale School of Public Health, shows saliva samples to be taken from any sterile container.

This is a much less invasive procedure than the nasal samples recently used to detect SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus for COVID-19.

The DOH is also studying the feasibility of grouped tests to further strengthen the country’s capacity.

As a component of the method, swab samples from several Americans will be placed in an RT-PCR test for singles. If the result is positive, additional individual tests will be performed on samples that are inflamed with the coronavirus., individual tests will no longer be necessary.

However, the DOH said joint testing will be effective if used in spaces with low COVID-19 prevalence.
