Manila, Philippines: A giant faction of Filipino lawmakers in the House of Representatives elected a new leader on Monday, but the outgoing president said the vote was a “parody” in a tense political stalemate between two of the president’s allies.
President Rodrigo Duterte warned last week that he would interfere if the dispute between House President Alan Peter Cayetano and MP Lord Allan Velasco threatened to approve next year’s budget. coronavirus pandemic in a country with the highest number of infections shown in Southeast Asia.
The dispute, however, was aggravated when Velasco’s fans accumulated as a user and on Monday at a sports club in the city of Quezón, in the capital region, declared Cayetano’s post vacant and chose Velasco to update it.
The club designed to look like the full room of the house, with a giant Filipino flag on an LED screen. Velasco showed up for the cayethane meeting for an orderly transition.
But Cayetano and his allies said at a House news convention that Velasco’s vote violated the law and regulations of the 300-member legislative chamber, which is governed by Duterte’s allies and mocked Velasco and his followers for organizing a consultation at a sports club. open-air Congress and said they used a fake mass, a symbol of house authority.
“They reject the constitution, they call for a revolutionary government,” Cayetano said. “What happened today is a sham. “
Cayetano’s side says it has the involvement of 205 lawmakers, so it asked Velasco to identify the 186 lawmakers his sued side voted for the presidency, along with a new secretary general of the House and a sergeant-in-arms.
Duterte called for a special House consultation starting Tuesday to speed up the approval of the national budget, but it is unclear how that with two rival speakers will not be easy.
Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr. , a close best friend of Cayetano, said that if Velasco turns out to have a majority of lawmakers, Cayetano’s side would settle for him getting the job of president in a legal house. procedure once the budget has been approved.
“We are legislators. We are starting to make an inventory of giggles because those who have attended give the impression that they are criminals. Let’s not destroy the institution,” Villafuerte told the press.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said Duterte didn’t need to get stuck in the dispute, but in the urgency of Congress approving the budget.
Duterte negotiated a power-sharing agreement last year in which Cayetano would serve as president for 15 months until this month, followed by Velasco, who would serve as president for the remaining 21 months.
Cayetano recently ran to resign, but his side said most lawmakers had voted to refuse his resignation. After Cayetano led the initial approval of the budget, his side suspended the sessions of Congress, which prevented Velasco from taking office as a component of the power-sharing. Several lawmakers protested that the suspension prevented them from reviewing the budget, adding very important allocations for the Health Decomposer, who is leading efforts to involve COVID-19 outbreaks.
The Philippines has reported more than 342,000 cases of coronavirus, 6,332 deaths.
