PH resumes OFW deployment in Saudi Arabia

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) will resume processing new employment contracts for Philippine staff (OFW) bound for Saudi Arabia on November 7 after deployment was suspended due to the pandemic and welfare concerns.

In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, a total of 189,826 new contracted OFWs were deployed to Saudi Arabia. They consisted of 37 278 domestic and cleaning and 152 548 structure and other professionalsArray

Migrant Workers Undersecretary Patricia Yvonne Caunan said the new employment contracts come with an insurance policy for domestic and professional staff that covers unpaid wages, airfare and reimbursement of hiring fees in case of unfinished contracts and other contingencies.

Ople said a delegation from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development will arrive next week to discuss, among other things, a review of OFW’s salaries and the automation of hiring processes.

Saudi officials will also discuss with the DMW the prestige of cases involving the unpaid salaries of thousands of employees of Philippine structures dating back to 2016.

Former Secretary of Labor and now president of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan, Silvestre Bello III, ordered a ban on the deployment of newly hired domestic workers in Saudi Arabia in November 2021, after the Saudi government continued to fail to pay the unpaid wages of some 10,000 OFW.
