Peru to produce and export more table grapes this season

According to Carlos Zamorano Macchiavello, Director General of the Peruvian Association of Grape Producers of Mesa (Provid), the production and export of table grapes in the 2020/2021 season, which has already begun, will increase from 10% to 15%, thanks to new types that have entered production in the north and south of the country.

Grape production without nuggets will increase, he said, so we will see how this will undermine the participation of the Red Globe variety, which in the 2019/2020 crusade exceeds 37%.

Zamorano stated that Peru had just over 20,000 hectares of table grapes to export at the beginning of last season (2019/2020) and that, according to an initial projection, this season there would be an accumulation of 3. 5%. expansion is not due to new surfaces, but to replenishment in more productive than classic types. He also said that the new types of table would prolong the Peruvian countryside, as some are early and some are defeated. .

Destination countries will vary greatly in this campaign, so the United States will remain the largest market, followed by Europe and China, he said, that they import from 70% to 80% of table grapes exported through Peru.

New Markets and Certification With respect to the new markets that Peruvian grapes can reach, Provid CEO said they had already complied with all plant fitness procedures required through Japan to open this market, but had not yet won a reaction from Japan. . So, he asked for politics to unlock any problems.

The country has also met all of them to export to Argentina and Chile, and has a challenge waiting to export to Ecuador. In addition, the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) has been invited to take steps with the Philippines.

Another vital challenge of the existing crusade is that inspectors of South Korea’s fitness authority will not be able to certify table grape fields and packing amenities in Peru due to the restriction of flights abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Senasa.

Zamorano noted that Senasa and Provid were running together. The table grape union will continue to take care of the entire registration process for exporters (even if they are not proportionate members), in addition to pre-inspections on the ground to lend a Senasa hand.
