According to projections by the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass), the volume of Hass avocado for export will accumulate by almost 23% in this campaign. The president of the association, Daniel Bustamante Canny, said he estimated that more than 360,000 tons had been exported between February and September, however, he said, costs have fallen from 20% to 25% so far this year to the same time in 2019.
In January and February, when the coronavirus pandemic had already spread to all continents, the value of the avocado increased, but as of March it has suffered a steady decline, according to data from Agrodata Peru.
“Compared to last year, there has been a widespread decline in prices. Prices went down because last year they were very good. In addition, in 2020 Peru and countries produced more avocados, and there has been a contraction in the target markets by closing hotels and restaurants, which are big consumers,” Bustamante said.
ProHass president also said that since this was a year, there would be less investment in new hectares of avocado cultivation, which in recent years have more than 1,500 to 2,000 hectares consistent with the year.
