Peru Discovers Tomb of Chinese Immigrants at Pre-Inca Site

Peruvian archaeologists have discovered the bodies of 16 Chinese men who arrived in South America just two centuries ago as semi-slave laborers at a sacred pre-Inca site.

The secret tomb in Lima is the largest burial site for Chinese immigrants ever discovered in Peru and presented to reporters on Thursday. Next to the skeletal remains were opium pipes and other non-public pieces used by immigrants.

Up to 100,000 Chinese immigrants arrived in Peru in the second half of the 19th century and made, for a small fee, exhausting paintings on farms, construction of railroad tracks and disposal of guano, bird droppings coveted as fertilizer.

The Chinese were discriminated against to death, having to be buried in pre-Inca sites after being barred from entering cemeteries reserved for Roman Catholics.
