House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif. ) will attend the United Nations climate talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Wednesday after uncertain midterm elections.
Pelosi will lead a delegation with thirteen other House Democrats, adding Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone (D-N. J. ), Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass. ), Foreign Relations Chairman Gregory Meeks (D-N. Y. ) and Special Committee on Climate Crisis Chair Kathy Castor (D-Fla. ).
“At COP27, as the world joins implementation”, our outstanding and experienced delegation will participate in meetings with our partners, as well as with civil society, youth and business leaders, to discuss the works to be carried out. to maintain our progress. To advance climate action and the planet,” Pelosi said in a statement.
Pelosi told her caucus on Wednesday that she will travel to Egypt and return home later this week, according to a user who attended the conference call. President Joe Biden also plans to attend.
Democrats will most likely tout inflation-reducing legislation, historic blank energy investment and climate policy enacted this summer. But the overseas talks on climate aid and the U. S. midterm elections are not enough. The U. S. is casting a shadow over this year’s negotiations.
Republicans are likely to take over the House, albeit by narrower margins than expected, ending Pelosi’s presidency and restricting the chances of new climate legislation in the near future.
Delegates at COP 27 are discussing for the first time whether rich countries send financial aid to the global future to offset the damage caused by historic greenhouse gas emissions. Help of all kinds.
Tensions are also emerging with U. S. economic partners. The U. S. government in Europe has asked whether certain provisions of the Clean Energy Inflation Reduction Act violate protectionist regulations of the World Trade Organization (Climatewire, November 7). Democratic lawmakers could face questions on the issue at COP 27.
The House delegation is one of many congressional teams visiting Egypt.
Some Senate Democrats are heading there on Wednesday. Environment and Public Works President Tom Carper (D-Del. ), who was planning to join, tested positive for Covid-19, announced, so he will not be present.
House Republicans, led by Rep. John Curtis (R-Utah), will also travel to Egypt with blank conservative power organizations (Greenwire, Nov. 3).
