Patients displaced after flooding at Halifax care facility

Several patients at the Halifax Mental Health and Addiction Services Center are being moved to services following Friday afternoon’s flooding.

Nova Scotia Health has shown a water leak in the Abbie J building. Memorial Lane at Veterans Memorial Lane.

According to a statement, flooding has forced at least five patients to be relocated, but it is unclear if others have been evacuated since the press release issued Saturday morning.

One patient who spoke to CTV News said he saw water dripping from the building’s internal pipes and believes it is a malfunction of the building’s sprinkler system.

“The sprinkler formula in one of the rooms failed,” the patient said. “When I came out of my room, the water was coming out from under the door. “

Nova Scotia Health said the extent of the water damage is still being assessed and it’s conceivable that more patients will want to be relocated.

“The leak has caused some inpatient beds to be temporarily out of service, which may simply increase the pressure on the system,” Nova Scotia Health said in a statement.

“Nova Scotia Health is ultimately in the process of notifying the families and/or next of kin of patients affected by relocation efforts. “

Construction is underway at the east end of the facility and it is unclear if this played a role in flood damage.

Nova Scotia Health said there is no timeline for maintenance and return of patients to the unit as the damage is still being assessed.
