Panama Ends Long Strike That Has Sparked Broader Protests

Panama’s teachers will return to elegance on Tuesday after a month-long strike subsidized by several other sectors that have blocked industry and beset the capital with traffic above the burden of life and government corruption.

The teachers’ strike triggered the largest social protest Panama has seen in years. Educators said they were fed up with the high costs of gasoline, food and medicine and were looking for more investment in education.

The teachers were joined by staff from structure and indigenous groups, as well as frustrated Panamanians. They erected roadblocks that froze roads of origin and caused shortages.

After more than a week of discussion mediated by the Roman Catholic Church, the government agreed to charge fees for dozens of products from critical customers and lower the gasoline charge.

The government said it would create mechanisms for the direct procurement of medicines in the face of shortages in public hospitals and pledged to set maximum costs for 150 medicines.

Dialogue between the protest teams and the government is due to resume on Wednesday. Several lawsuits remain pending, including reducing the electricity charge, expanding government transparency, and reducing government corruption.

Before pronouncing an end to his strike on Monday, he held a gigantic rally in the capital.
