NEW DELHI, March 17 (Bernama) — Pakistan has welcomed the overwhelming success of the United Nations General Assembly’s solution to fight Islamophobia.
It was followed by Friday, the International Day Against Islamophobia, with 115 votes in favour and none against.
The General Assembly has condemned incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence against Muslims, which manifests itself in incidents of desecration of the Holy Qur’an, attacks on mosques, Islamic sites and shrines and other acts of intolerance.
“The adoption of the solution comes at a critical time, against a backdrop of emerging Islamophobia,” Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
The solution was presented to the 193-member Assembly across Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
There were 44 abstentions: Britain, India, South Korea and the European Union.
The Assembly for the appointment of a “UN Special Envoy to combat Islamophobia”.
On Friday in Geneva, Nassima Baghli, the OIC’s permanent observer, said that “Islamophobia is on the rise as a result of the Israeli aggression against Gaza. “
While welcoming the resolution to appoint a UN special envoy, Malaysia will push for concrete moves to combat Islamophobia.
“We strongly urge the foreign network to identify concrete measures to counter the prevailing situations and attitudes that encourage such heinous acts,” Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Friday.
