Match report – ODI World Cup: South Africa pull off a heist to push Pakistan to elimination

South Africa survived a late rate from Pakistan to claim a thrilling one-ground victory and move closer to the World Cup semifinals on Friday. Aiden Markram fired a fake 91 and, at 206-4, South Africa were on their way to comfortably chasing a 271-point target. However, the final pair of Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi scored 11 points, leading their team to cross the baseline with 16 balls to lose.

It’s chaos right now. The boys are enjoying the moment. The boys pick up Shamsi. Chaos right now. Biting ending, if you are a South Africa fan you will be happy. With the tension coming from our search, we have not done an intelligent task to remedy this. It will be less difficult to have those conversations, especially after the victory. You have to have the guys in the most productive conditions and explicit what they were thinking. It’s hard to say now, but those conversations will happen. It’s anything that we’ve talked about and that’s been mentioned. We have a plan when we attack first, we cannot say with conviction that we have it when we concede. We need to be much more clinical with the bat. It is good to hear. KG (Rabada) is fine, he has been more cautious, he has some back problems and a few days of rest before New Zealand and he will be in the fight. Excited for Shamsi, he started with the ball, came when conditions were favorable and then with the bat. We saw Shamsi gushing on social media about his batting. He may not stop until the next few weeks, but it makes sense for a veteran player like Shamsi to come out with the bat like this.

We are very close, we did not end well. Very disappointing for the entire team. We fight very well. At the plate we were missing 10-15. The bowlers and fast spinners fought smartly but unfortunately that was not the case. It’s part of the game, in DRS it’s part of the game. If he had given it, it would have benefited us. We have a chance to win and stay in the race, but we can’t be. We will try our best in the next 3 games and will try our best to play for Pakistan. Let’s see where we are after that.

Really happy. I knew I had to paint some paintings there, but the guys before me fixed it. The credit goes to those guys, too. I’ve played enough cricket to know that it works for you, but it doesn’t. I didn’t expect to be here with my tablets to do this interview. (On the last over) If I tried to play a big shot and didn’t make it, the guys wouldn’t welcome me into the locker room. So I had no doubt that I deserved to stand up for myself and put Kesh on strike. These are the kind of moments you dream of, being from the middle to the end and winning a game for your team. Kesh was amazing there.

At first, it is more difficult to hit, the ball attracts attention. But I kept checking, I know my strengths. I was lucky to score points. I’m just trying to fulfill the role I’ve been given. Keep supporting me as opposed to the spinners. I started earlier in the tournament but couldn’t convert it, I’m glad I did today. You can aim for the shortest edge, you can check your luck on that side. This field is another of the previous one. It’s about taking the first grounds.
