Pakistan sees buildup in COVID-19 positivity rate ahead of holiday season

On Sunday, the country reported 3 more deaths from the virus, following two previously reported deaths in 24 hours, Geo News reported.

Data from the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad showed that in the last 24 hours 628 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported.

“COVID-19 statistics as of August 8, 2022 Total number of tests in the last 24 hours: 19,451 Positive cases: 628 Positivity: 3. 23 Deaths: 3 Patients in intensive care: 163,” the NIH said in a statement.

At least 19,451 diagnostic tests have been performed in the last 24 hours.

NIH knowledge showed that the recorded positivity rate was 3. 23% with 3 more deaths overnight. 163 COVID-19 patients are admitted to intensive care facilities (ICUs) and are being treated at other medical services across the country, the NIH said.

Amid the potential threat of an outbreak, the NIH banned seniors and children from attending meetings and Majalis Ashura and issued rules for holding rallies and processions, Geo News reported.

He said in the rules that popular COVID-19 operating procedures, i. e. wearing masks, social distancing, and using disinfectants/hand washing, will have to be followed, and that organizing committees should be established for all SOP events.

The NIH also encouraged seniors and youth to attend the event online from their homes.

The novel coronavirus has affected 19,942 doctors in Pakistan as much, the resources said.

According to resources from the National Institute of Health (NIH), as many as 175 fitness staff members have died nationwide from the pandemic.

Resources said that to date, 12,358 doctors, 2,687 nurses and another 4,897 physical body workers have become inflamed with COVID-19 in the country. They said another 19,763 people have so far recovered from the infection in Pakistan.

In particular, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, had said he feared the number of coronavirus cases would increase, more pressure on fitness systems and workers.

Experts said the two subvariants of the Omicron variant, namely BA. 4 and BA. 5, are to blame for COVID-19. They said those variants have escaped mutations that give them an advantage.

According to the latest report from the World Health Organization, it is responsible for 52% of cases sequenced at the end of June, compared to 37% in a week. In the United States, it is estimated to cause about 65% of infections.

Experts also said the subvariants also infect other people who are already vaccinated or who are already inflamed with COVD-19, but no evidence is needed to show whether they cause serious illness among other vaccinated people, Geo News reported.

According to the website, BA. 5, which is a variant of omicron, is effective in escaping immune coverage presented by vaccination or a past infection.

For this reason, “BA5 has an expansion merit over other sublines of Omicron that are circulating,” Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical officer on COVID-19, was quoted as saying by Geo News. (ANI)
