Jagdip Singh Kahlon, secretary-general of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, alleged that alcohol and meat were served to the party, which opposes the ideals of the Sikh community.
He strongly condemned the incident and suggested that the Pakistani government take action against those responsible.
“Unacceptable! I strongly condemn the sacrilegious incident at the sacred premises of Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib, where a party involving alcohol and meat was held. @GovtofPakistan take swift action against all those responsible,” Kahlon posted on X (formerly Twitter).
In one incident in 2021, Pakistani-style barehead photographs at the Gurdwara compound sparked widespread complaints on social media.
Expressing fear over the incident, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Chairman (SGPC), Harjinder Singh Dhami, and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Chairman, Harmeet Singh Kalka, took note of the video and its implications, Khalsa. Vox reported.
SGPC Chairman Dhami pointed out that if the occasion were to take a stand in the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib complex, it would be a violation of ‘maryada’ and Sikh sentiments, in a position so strongly related to Guru Nanak Dev.
Expressing disappointment, he said: “The government has refrained from participating in this kind of act as it could hurt the emotions of the global Sikh community. “
DSGMC spokesperson Manjit Singh Bhoma demanded a public apology from the organisers, pointing out that the event was held near the PMU office, which is an integral component of the Gurdwara Kartarpur complex. The call for an apology underlines the seriousness with which Sikh organizations view any action that possibly disrespects the sanctity of the devout site.
The incident has revived concerns about the need for strict compliance with the Sikh “rehat maryada” and culpable control of sites.
In particular, the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib holds immense importance to Sikhs around the world, and any perceived disrespect is sure to provoke reactions from the Sikh community, Khalsa Vox reported. (ANI)
