Pakistan: Police officer allegedly raped and called to complain about harassment

A case was filed against a police officer for allegedly raping a woman on 21 September at her home in the Pakistani city of Gujranawala.

According to the victim’s father, deputy police inspector (ASI) Mubashir summoned her home to investigate her complaint against some men who harassed her.

Local media reported that the woman said the men tried to assault her in an altercation, so ASI Mubashir was appointed investigator, the altercation took place on September 9 in the Bismillah settlement area and then the woman was transferred to the hospital for medical treatment.

However, when the officer called her home for further investigation, he allegedly raped her.

Local media also reported that the victim alleged that senior police officers had first worked to keep Mubashir’s call out of the case and that the woman had been stressed to replace her as opposed to the policeman.

However, the woman has now filed a petition against the investigator to Gujranwala Police Chief (CPO) Rai Babar and ordered the culprits to investigate.

The incident provoked outrage on social media as Internet users continue with the rights and protection of women in Pakistan.

Sharing a clip of the victim recalling the incident circulating on social media, twitter user @broader_the, “Are our other people committed to protecting us?”

Referring to a recent rape case in Pakistan, in which two men raped a woman at gunpoint while waiting for roadside assistance after his car stopped operating in Punjab, user @maaahammm tweeted: “A policeman named Mubashir sexually assaulted a woman, an investigation into Gujranwala. It’s so disturbing, I just need CCPO Lahore (capital police officer) to tell us which direction does it deserve the girl to have taken?

@maaaahammm referred to the comments of the CHC Umar Sheikh in several television interviews about the incident in which he warned that the woman had taken another course towards her destination among other comments that were considered problematic.
