As the number of coronavirus cases in Palestine continues to increase, Israeli forces this week demolished a COVID-19 detection clinic in the city of Hebron, the epicentre of the epidemic in the occupied West Bank.
According to residents, Israeli forces demolished the clinic mid-afternoon before dawn on Tuesday morning.
Tuesday’s demolition came more than a week after Israeli forces issued an order to stop the paintings in the building.
The order gave the landowner, who had donated the land to the municipality of Hebron, 96 hours to prove he had a building permit.
If you provided an approved building permit through Israel, according to the order, the clinic would be destroyed.
The landowner, Raed Maswadeh, told Mondoweiss that the following week he had been working with the Israeli government to obtain the proper building permits.
Because the land, located just in front of the city of Hebron, is located in Zone C, any type of structure or fieldwork requires Israeli permission, almost a feat, because Israel overwhelmingly rejects any request for Palestinian structure in Area C.
Just 24 hours before the demolition, Maswadeh and his lawyer were informed through the Israel Civil Administration Office in Beit El that entry permits had been approved and that the clinic would be destroyed.
“We thought everything was fine and we were relieved,” Maswadeh told Mondoweiss. “So when we woke up in the morning to locate the destroyed construction, we were surprised,” he said.
According to Maswadeh, the Israeli government informed its lawyer of the demolition by email Monday night, after his lawyer closed his for that day.
Maswadeh called the Israeli army movements and civilian management “shady” and said it was “inhumane” to demolish a COVID-19 clinic amid the pandemic.
“My circle of relatives donated our land and invested thousands of shekels of our own cash to build this clinic,” Maswadeh said, adding that he decided to begin the task after his grandfather’s death due to complications of COVID-19.
“It’s our way of honoring my grandfather’s reminiscence and helping our community,” he said. “But Israel doesn’t care about that, and they obviously don’t care that the Palestinians die from the coronavirus.”
