Our Most Sensible Stories of 2023, From Dianne Feinstein to Japanese Sandos

Your support helped us produce 1100 stories this year, showing an unmatched breadth of news, arts, and cultural coverage

Thanks to our amazing readers and supporters, it was another record-breaking year for 48 Hills, a decade later, as we continue to grow and promote the stories that mainstream media outlets don’t need or can’t. We produced more than 1,100 items this year, offering paintings for dozens of local journalists, critics, artists, and creators, and selling thousands of local artistic, musical, film, scenic, nightlife, and cultural events, festivals, and productions. Our media canopy was the only one that challenged the dominant narrative of neoliberal, pro-billionaire, pro-developer, pro-police, and City Hall state media, while also shedding light on the corruption and behind-the-scenes deals that still shape city politics.

Below are some of our biggest stories from a busy year. They will deliver unprecedented policies through an independent local news site with a small team and a small budget. We’d love to double that policy in 2024. Please send it to us here if you can, tell your friends to sign up for our daily newsletter, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, something diabolical but unfortunately mandatory (we promise, there will be more channels to come). Thank you for all your set, congratulations to all our collaborators, let’s keep the soul of this city alive!
