Osun-Osogbo ends with low participation due to COVID-19

The annual Osun-Osogbo grand final ended on Friday with a low participation in the grove, observing the annual cultural in strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the state government on Tuesday announced a ban on social activities and meetings at the Osun-Osogbo festival and was limited to the UNESCO World Heritage site only to the faithful.

The state government, however, approved compliance with the classical festival-related rites and routines (in strict compliance with COVID-19 guidelines) and that legal and faithful persons could enter the grove.

However, in the Grove on Friday, Governor Gboyega Oyetola, represented through the state commissioner of Culture and Tourism, Obawale Adebisi, pleaded with the faithful and Osogbo’s monarch, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, to the state, claiming that next year’s birthday party would bring more tourists.

“I appreciated the monarch and Osun-Osogbo for their cooperation with the state government.

“People know how fast COVID-19 is spreading, especially in our state and one of the protocols of the minimum number of people coming in combination and this festival is a foreign festival.

“People who come for the festival, no one can bring it.

“Osun Osogbo is strategic for the state because it is a foreign festival and our plan was for outsiders to register for the festival, but because of COVID-19, we couldn’t do it.

“We plead with the King to bear with the state and we assure him that by next year we will bring many people as many as possible to celebrate with him.

“We wish the Oba and the rest of the people of Osun a lot of luck. We wish you a happy celebration,” the governor said.

The Ataoja of the land of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, Larooye II, host of the Osun-Osogbo Festival, thanked the state government for its very antiquity of the festival.

The royal father said that the faithful of Osun’s deity also understood why the social gathering was limited to the feast.

However, Oba Olanipekun prayed that the pandemic would end as soon as possible, as well as pray for peace and unity in the state and country at large, with the assurance of lives and property.
