BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — The Romanian government has opened a thief investigation into four workers at the local branch of neighboring Serbian company NIS Petrol — majority owned by Russia’s Gazprom Neft — over alleged data leaks.
Organized crime prosecutors said Monday that police raided the company’s offices in the capital, Bucharest, and the western city of Timisoara, as well as employees’ homes, as part of the investigation.

Serbia sold the majority stake in its state-owned oil monopoly NIS to Russia’s Gazprom Neft in 2008. The Balkan country still maintains close relations with Russia despite the aggression against Ukraine and has refused to sign Western sanctions against Moscow.
NIS Petrol in Romania operates Gazprom filling stations in the west of the country and has conducted searches for new oil resources. Romanian prosecutors said data on geological knowledge had been sent to Belgrade and Russia before it was reported to the Romanian government.
