One dead in football riots against Argentina

A user was killed Thursday when violent clashes near a soccer match outside Buenos Aires between Boca Juniors and Gimnasia y Esgrima spread to the stadium and field, the government said.

Unrest continued inside, where surprised spectators were seen sneaking past the fences to escape the violence and enter the camp.

The match was suspended after nine minutes until the extra was made “for lack of guarantees (of security),” said referee Hernán Mastrangelo, minutes after players and coaching staff left the field to go to the locker room.

Authorities at the San Martin Hospital in La Plata announced the death of a 57-year-old man from cardiac arrest while being transferred from the stadium to the hospital.

Several fans, including children led or carried by adults, ran out of the stands and entered the field, where other people were seen sitting or lying, recovering from exposure to tear gas.

The match came at a critical time in Argentina’s top league, with four games to play and Gimnasia betting its last chance to win the name at home, while Boca was looking for a win to return to the top division.

“What was meant to be a party ends there. It hurts all of us what happened, it’s massive and we regret it,” Boca Juniors coach Hugo Ibarra told reporters.

The deadly violence came five days after a stampede in Indonesia triggered by police firing tear gas inside a crowded stadium left at least 131 other people dead and 32 more children.
