BAMURA, Iraq (AP) — One user was killed and dozens wounded Thursday when a stampede erupted outside a soccer stadium in Iraq hours before the Gulf Arab Cup final, officials said.
Long banned from hosting football matches abroad, war-torn Iraq relied on the Arabian Gulf Cup to repair its symbol, but had already been forced to do so by organizational failures.
Thousands of fans, many without tickets, had gathered since dawn outdoors at the 65,000-seat stadium in southern Iraq’s main city of Basra, hoping to see the final between Iraq and Oman.
