Oman tracks progress in Global Food Security Index

The Sultanate of Oman recorded the highest global progress with a score of 71. 2 (a net replenishment of 13. 8 from the overall score from 2022 to 2012) on the 2022 Global Food Security Index (GFSI), published via the Economist Impact. country in the report, Finland, is 83. 7. With this score, Oman jumps five positions in the GFSI, moving from position 40 in 2021 to position 35 in 2022.

The report tested 4 main signs in which Oman ranked 34th globally in the Food Availability Index, the Sustainability and Adaptation Index, 21st in the Accessibility Index and 42nd in the Quality and Safety Index.

The report also looked at the country’s functionality in sub-indicators, with Oman recording significant growth. In terms of variation in average food costs out of one hundred, Oman scored 98. 5. As a proportion of the population below the global poverty line, Oman scored 99. 3. In food safety net programmes, Oman scored one hundred and in nutrition standards, Oman scored 88. 7.

The report states that Oman ranks 35th globally with a score of 71. 2, the UAE ranks 23rd and first among GCC countries with a score of 75. 2, followed by Qatar in 30th position with a score of 72. 4 and Bahrain ranks 38th globally with a score of 70. 3. Saudi Arabia ranked 41st with a score of 69. 9 and Kuwait 50th with a score of 65. 2.

The five best performing countries in the overall food security environment in 2002 were Finland with a score of 83. 7, Ireland (81. 7), Norway (80. 5), France (80. 2) and the Netherlands (80. 1).

The Global Food Security Index (GFSI) shows that the global food environment is deteriorating. After peaking in 2019, GFSI has since declined amid rising food costs and hunger on an unprecedented scale. Based on 11 years of data, the index highlights that the food formula has weakened over the years, with crises in 2020-22, adding to the COVID-19 pandemic and high commodity costs, highlighting this fragility. These crises exacerbate formulated disorders that threaten food security and weaken the resilience of food formula.

The Global Food Security Index (GFSI) examines issues of accessibility, availability, quality and food safety, as well as herbal resources and resilience in a set of 113 countries. It is a dynamic style of food security index that covers qualitative and quantitative indicators. Each country receives a score from 0 to one hundred, and the score goes towards a hundred, indicating higher performance.
