Oman thanks Iran for ‘handing over’ Iranian-US detainees

Tehran said Tuesday that Oman thanked the Iranian government for “handing over” an 85-year-old Iranian-American detainee who was allowed to leave the country for medical treatment.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on its website that Oman’s most level-headed diplomat called his Iranian counterpart to expressly thank Tehran’s resolution to hand over Baquer Namazi, a retired UN children’s agency official. , as a “humanitarian gesture”. , detained in Tehran in 2016, he has left Iran.

Last October, he underwent surgery in Iran to clear a blockage in an artery in the brain that his circle of family and supporters described as potentially deadly.

The UN announced this week that following heavy pressure from the Iranian government, Tehran agreed to lift Namazi’s travel ban so he can obtain medical treatment abroad.
