The scammers hacked into the official Twitter account (NYSE:TWTR) of the Omani embassy in India, replacing the profile picture with Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse and the spam user response feature with fake XRP phishing links.
At the time of publication, the Twitter account OmanEmbassy_Ind showed several retweets that matched Garlinghouse’s, in an effort to legitimize the activity. The hacked account responded to the tweets using the hashtag XRP, encouraging users to sign up to receive a fake gift of one hundred million tokens: worth more than $42 million at an XRP value of $0. 42.
