Oman Air will sign up for the Oneworld alliance in 2024, adding its third new member in five years.
The Muscat-based airline will also be Oneworld’s third member airline in the Middle East, after Qatar Airways, which joined in 2013 and sponsors access by Oman Air, as well as Royal Jordanian Airlines, which joined the alliance in 2007.
Oneworld, which announced Oman Air’s access at IATA’s annual general meeting in Doha, says the airline has already concluded codeshare agreements with 4 member airlines: Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian and SriLankan Airlines.
“Joining Oneworld will pave the way for new codeshare opportunities, additional global connectivity in the alliance network,” he added.
Oneworld’s lead executive, Rob Gurney, acknowledges that “there will be some degree of overlap between the networks,” with 3 members from the Middle East, but temporarily notes that the alliance “doesn’t see significant damage in it. “
“What we see when new members sign up for the alliance, and we see it shrinking again and again, is that [that] motivates other members to reconsider their network plans,” Gurney added, speaking at a briefing after the announcement. .
He cites the example of cities like Doha and Seattle, hubs for Qatar Airways and Alaska Airlines members, respectively, who see news from Oneworld members.
The Oneworld alliance incorporated Alaska Airlines in 2021, while Royal Air Maroc was its first African member when it joined in 2020.
