Lineworkers and electricians from Oklahoma traveled to Guatemala this December to help provide power to farmers and their families.
The Oklahoma Electric Cooperative Association said eight Oklahomans along with volunteers from Arkansas and Colorado highlighted about 200 structures in 38 villages, bringing electric power to the Alta Verapaz region. The 14-day project is a partnership between the philanthropic arm of the National Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NRECA), NRECA International and Heifer International.
Volunteers installed circuit breaker boxes, plugs, plugs and switches, and meters on concrete poles outside homes. Nearly 1,200 farmers and their families will now have secure electricity by Christmas for the first time.
