Ohio Primary Elections: Overview of Congressional Primary Elections in OH-2, OH-6, and OH-9

Ohio’s number one congressional election will be held next week in order to set the bar for the upcoming general election.

The race in northwest Ohio garnered national attention. Many applicants are vying for Ohio’s second congressional district. And it’s a war between political newcomers and elected officials in Ohio’s 6th Congressional District.

Primary Election Day in Ohio is March 19. Polls are open from 6:30 a. m. to 7 p. m. m. 30. et early voting runs until 5 p. m. this Sunday.

The race for Ohio’s 9th congressional district has gone undramatically, as Republicans once tried to unseat U. S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in congressional history.

State Rep. Derek Merrin, former state Rep. Craig Riedel and former Napoleon Mayor Steve Lankenau in the poll after Jan. 6 protester J. R. Majewski, all withdrew earlier this month after calling Special Olympics athletes “retarded” in a podcast.

Majewski, the Republican nominee in 2022, lost in thirteen issues to Kaptur, who first elected in 1983 and is seeking to win his 22nd election in November. Ahead of the 2022 election, The Associated Press reported that Majewski lied about his deployment to Afghanistan for combat missions. Military records received via the AP show he instead raced at an air base in Qatar.

Merrin, who represents Monclova, has served in the Ohio House of Representatives since 2016. He lost this year’s election for Speaker of the House to Jason Stephens, who had bipartisan support.

Riedel served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2017 to 2022 but lost the number one race of 2022 for the Ninth District to Majewski.

Conservative Charlie Kirk leaked audio of Riedel criticizing Trump last year.

“Look, Donald Trump, he’s another user than me,” Riedel is heard saying in the audio. “I don’t like the way he communicates. I think he’s arrogant. I don’t like the way he insults people. I just don’t think that’s very suitable for a president.

This led to Merrin being hired to run for Congress.

Lankenau served three terms as Napoleon’s mayor in his mid-twenties, according to WTOL.

Riedel is preparing for next week’s election with more than $234,000 in cash, more than double what his warring parties combined, according to the Federal Election Commission. Merrin has more than $94,000 and Lankenau more than $19,000.

A dozen applicants are vying to fill U. S. Rep. Brad Wenstrup’s seat in Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District.

Eleven Republicans will face off in the primary: Kim Georgeton, Phil Heimlich, Tom Hwang, Larry Kidd, Tim O’Hara, Charles Tassell, David Taylor, Derek Myers, State Sen. Shane Wilkin and State Sen. Niraj Antani.

Samantha Meadows is the Democrat running for Wenstrup’s seat.

Antani, who lives in the district, served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2014 to 2020 and has served in the Ohio Senate ever since.

There is no residency in the congressional district, however, Antani told the Butler County Journal-News that he would move to the district if he won.

Wilkin served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2018 to 2022 and then began his term in the Ohio Senate.

Myers is the former editor of the Scioto Valley Guardian and had previously sought the Chillicothe City Council nomination as a Democrat.

He had a brief stint in office with former U. S. Rep. George Santos in January 2023. Myers filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Santos, R-N. Y. , after the job offer was canceled. Regarding Myers’ complaint against Santos, the Ethics Committee’s report on Santos “fails to substantiate this allegation. “

O’Hara, a former U. S. Marine Corps drilling instructor, is a former U. S. Marine Corps drilling instructor. In the U. S. , he has the maximum money at more than $524,100.

Ohio’s Sixth Congressional District is wide open after Bill Johnson began his new position as president of Youngstown State University earlier this year, freeing up his congressional seat.

Three Republicans are vying against each other: Sen. Michael Rulli of Salem, state Rep. Reggie Stoltzfus of the Canton of Paris and Rick Tsai.

Both Rulli and Stoltzfus have served on the Ohio General Assembly since 2019.

Tsai, a chiropractor from Palestine, jumped into the ring out of frustration with the government’s reaction to the derailment of the exercise at Norfolk Southern.

Stoltzfus has the maximum money at more than $239,500.

Michael Kripchak and Rylan Finzer will face off on the Democratic side.

Kripchak served in the U. S. Air Force. for a few years, he then spent time in Los Angeles working in the entertainment industry and returned to Youngstown during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finzer, a former chairman of the Stark County Young Democrats, is the founder of Finzer’s Finest, a hashish apothecary brand. He has about $1,870 in cash.

Regardless of who wins the primary, they will face off in a special election in June to fill the vacancy.
